Tips For Improving Your Garage Door

If you are interested in renovating your garage door, then there are several different ways that you can go about it. You could get a new style of door, try out a different material, or simply try to enhance your current door with some extra features.

Popular Garage Door Styles

There are three main styles that you can choose from: sectional rolling doors, sliding doors, and swinging doors.

Sectional rolling doors are extremely common and are likely already installed in your garage. They offer the benefit of requiring minimal space to function, but they aren't always the most appealing option. The segmented nature of these doors can make them less attractive than solid doors.

Sliding doors are good choices because they are solid and are pretty much completely out of the way when in the open position. The downside to this is that you will need to create an area for the sliding doors. You can either choose to install them horizontally or vertically, but both require a fair bit of preparation.

Swinging doors take up the most space as far as opening and closing goes, but they also do have an unparalleled aesthetic. If you are looking for an elegant, yet rustic, opening and closing motion, then you can't beat swinging doors.

Material

When it comes to the material that you want, some of the most popular options are wood and metal.

Wood can be beautiful, but it also has some very specific problems, including warping during temperature fluctuations and termites. These can be avoided by properly sealing the door, but you will need to maintain the door and keep an eye on its status. There are also a wide variety of woods at many different price points, so you can get a door that is as expensive and durable as you need.

Metal exhibits a similar range of qualities and prices, but it also tends to act as a pretty good conductor. In other words, your basic metal door will be pretty bad at insulating your home and will let a lot of heat get into your house during the winter. In summer, it can also heat up quite a bit, letting all of that extra heat into your garage. Certain metals also fare poorly in the rain, so you will want to keep an eye on the status of your door as time goes on. Prolonged exposure to the elements can lead to rapid deterioration.
